About the Header

My blog header is a picture of Kuhio Park Terrace, where my early childhood in Kalihi, Honolulu, Hawaii began. I am the one standing next to my father and my brother, Jamison, is the one goofing off. It was and still is one of the roughest housing projects on Oahu. It is part of who I am and where I am from.

This cast iron fireback was made at the Saugus Ironworks in 1660. It was cast for Joseph Bartlett (son of Robert Bartlett) who built a house in Manomet around 1660. Firebacks were located in the rear of the hearth and reflected heat into the room. The designs on this one were made by pressing turned wooden spindles into a sand base then pouring molten iron into the impression. This fireback has been on loan to Pilgrim Hall Museum from the Society of the Descendants of Robert Bartlett since 1931.
